As the public concentrates on the ongoing Russia investigation implicating President Trump and his government, Republican leaders are progressively ridding away some of the most critical finance laws regarding campaigns. After mainly giving unions and corporations the same rights as those people in the horrible 2010 Citizen United Decision, it remains unclear if the Supreme Court will allow those rights to apply to non-profit making organizations such as churches exempted from tax. However, if the president and his associates have their way, the Supreme Court will not have a choice.
The president has already endorsed an executive order attempting to weaken the Johnson Amendment, which notably forbids organizations such as churches from participating directly or indirectly in political campaigns that oppose or support a candidate. Currently, the house is boldly working hard to abolish the amendment altogether.
On 30th August 2017, End Citizens United gave a press briefing overwhelmingly opposing the attempts of the current administration to take away significant protections provided by the Johnson Amendment, introduced in the house by then US Senator Lyndon Johnson. In the press briefing, the president of End Citizens United Tiffany Muller cautioned that the move would convert churches into instruments of undisclosed campaign spending.
Johnson Amendment got introduced in July 1954 by LBJ, and it was very dear to the heart of the future president since he had maliciously been attacked and branded a communist by non-profit corporations during his Senate campaign. Unbelievably, given the controversy it is instigating today, the amendment was not contentious at all when it was passed. In its terms, organizations such as universities, charities, and churches risk losing their exemption from tax by getting involved in political campaigns.
