Drug and alcohol addiction has no boundaries, it is a disease that can affect anyone. Many addicts begin using at a young age, Victoria Doramus had spent nearly half her life getting high. Doramus talked to medium.com about how she overcame her addiction.
Detoxing and Getting Sober
If you have not suffered with the “disease” of addiction then you may wonder why an addict chooses to destroy their life. Well, the road to recovery is a steep hill. Victoria Doramus was addicted to cocaine and the prescription drug, Adderall.
According to Visualcv.com, at age 26, she knew her life was a wreck and spiraling out of control. She decided to go into rehab, after spending 45 days in the program she left with the misconception that she was free from her addiction. She had the attitude of many addicts, “I can do it alone.”
Although, 45 days is a good detoxification period to cleanse the body of drugs and alcohol. Sadly, it is only the first step to recovery. It will not lead to living a sober life automatically.
The probability of relapsing is extremely high. Victoria Doramus (@victoriadoramus), like many others, thought that she could take the rein and live a drug free life. Unfortunately she relapsed, her disease (addiction) had control of her. She ended up all alone and homeless.
Victoria Doramus Chose to Live
Victoria Doramus had hit her rock bottom, and finally accepted that living sober is a life-long journey. You have to be committed, and embrace the hard work you will need to do. She went into rehab again, but the program was more intense. She had the determination to live and today she is helping other addicts. Her role as a recovery expert is an important one because she understands what it is like to be an addict.
